SUKI
3-6 years
Female
An infected lung, blood parasites, and advanced cancer—poor Suki’s body has been through an unimaginable ordeal. Her battle reached a critical point when her lungs became 90% full of fluid, leaving her with just 10% of her lung capacity. She was quite literally drowning.
We rushed her 100km to our specialist vet clinic. On the terrifying journey there, Suki even suffered a minor stroke when her tongue turned purple. Thanks to a nebuliser previously donated by a wonderful supporter, we were able to support her breathing and stabilise her just enough to reach the clinic.
At the hospital, the veterinary team performed an emergency procedure to drain a full litre of infected fluid from her chest. The relief was instant, and for the first time in weeks, Suki could finally breathe deeply.
Choosing Comfort Over Cruel Treatments
While at the hospital, further ultrasounds and scans revealed a heartbreaking diagnosis: Suki has multiple small tumours throughout her lungs. It is cancer, and it is terminal.
The vet asked if we wanted to attempt chemotherapy or put her to sleep right then and there. After an emotional day of discussion between Thep, myself, and our staff, our hearts gave us a clear answer: No! Suki was too weak for the toxic side effects of chemo, and we couldn't bear the thought of her final days being spent inside a cold hospital cage. We wanted to bring her home to the rescue, where she belongs.
Our goal now is entirely focused on palliative care and ultimate comfort. We are managing her symptoms with:
Daily CBD Oil: To manage her comfort levels and ease the effects of the tumours.
Nebulizer Therapy: To support her breathing right here at home whenever she struggles.
Careful Medication: Balancing her iron supplements for anaemia and tracking her fluid levels closely.
A Miraculous Homecoming
We prepared ourselves for a sombre goodbye, but Suki had other plans! When we went to collect her from the vet, we were absolutely over the moon. Instead of a fading dog, we were greeted by a joyful girl jumping up and down in her cage, wagging her tail furiously, and showering us with wet licks.
Suki isn't at death's door just yet—she is home, she is happy, and she is soaking up every single moment with her friends. We don’t know how many days, weeks, or months we have left with this incredible girl, but we are determined to make sure her remaining time is filled with soft rugs, familiar faces, and zero pain.
